William F. Freehoff collection, 1853-1865.

Consists of three Mexican documents signed by Antonio López de Santa Anna, Benito Juárez, and Emperor Maximilian in 1853, 1860, and 1865, respectively. Santa Anna (1794-1876) was a Mexican general and statesman, who gained the presidency in 1833. The document signed by him is the appointment of José Arechavaleta as an officer in the "cuerpa politico del marina." Benito Juárez (1806-1872) was a Mexican national hero and president. The document signed by him is an order for retirement at half pay for José Arechavaleta. Maximilian (1832-1867) was archduke of Austria and emperor of Mexico (1864-1867). The document signed by him is for the appointment of eight individuals to the Royal Order of Guadalupe.
